Unto Others – ‘Strength’ (Roadrunner)

Sometimes it is really hard to know where to start with an album review. Sometimes, it is merely a case of writer’s block. At others, it is genuinely wondering what you can actually say about said offering, either to do it complete justice (which is often impossible) or so as not to rip it to equally complete shreds (which is far easier). In the case of this, the second album from Unto Others, it was a case of there being so much going on, so many influences at play, bouncing off and around each other, that it needed several listens for Monk to actually get to grips with what he was listening to… To add to the confusion, their first album was released under a different name…

Spacegoat – ‘Catharsis’ EP (Self-Released)

We all know that music can be an effective cathartic release, in fact there are even some bands who are built entirely around that principle. But for an album to be simply called ‘Catharsis’ it’s clearly going to be something pretty raw and powerful that deserves a listen. What Jonny B couldn’t get my head around in this case though was that it came from a band called Spacegoat, which brought to mind funky science fiction themes… But he couldn’t have been further from the mark on that one… It’s a bit of an unusual situation though because JB first listened to this back in the summer before the album release was delayed by a couple of months, so he had to dive back into the album, which gave it a second chance to see if his opinion had changed since round one!

Grinder Blues – ‘El Dos’ (Metalville)

Although he grew up on the outskirts of Chicago, and subsequently moving to first Missouri and then Texas, dUg Pinnick – best known for his four-decade long career as frontman with prog metal pioneers King’s X – had never dabbled in the blues. That all changed back in 2014, when he teamed up with the Bihlmann brothers, Jabo and Scot, and thus the Grinder Blues project was born. Now, seven years later, the trio – Pinnick seems to have a thing about threesomes (sic) – are back with, as its title suggests, their second album.

Doro – ‘Triumph And Agony Live’ (Rare Diamonds)

It has becoming somewhat of a de rigeur task for artists and bands to celebrate a particular anniversary of one of their more acclaimed albums by performing the same in its entirety at a handful of shows and then releasing the result in the myriad of different forms which are available to us today. Doro Pesch proved to be no exception to this growing trend when, back in 2017 she decided to perform Warlock’s fourth and final album in its entirety at that year’s Sweden Rock festival. Now, almost exactly a year before the studio album marks its next landmark (it’s 35th anniversary), the set has been dusted down and given a bumper audio-visual translation for the home audience…

Dead Man’s Whiskey – ‘Breakout’ EP (Self-Released)

There can be no doubt about it: after the last 18 or so months of Covidications, we’re all ready to ‘Breakout’ and get back to something resembling our previous lives. And London hard rocking quintet Dead Man’s Whiskey may well have provided the soundtrack for us to do so, with this aptly titled short EP of southern blues tinged NWoCR, a collection of four new songs and a new, stripped back version of one of their own, and their fans’, favourites.
