Monk has to admit that, when this gig was announced his immediate thought was “are they feckin’ serious? There’s no way they’re gonna fill the Odyssey” (to give the venue the name by which most Belfast music fans still call it). His second thought was that the booking was down to either a matter of American ego – “we have to play an arena” – or the size of the stage show they would be bringing for their first return to the Über Kingdom since just before the first Covid lockdown. HEALTH/Maenad Veyl – Manchester, The White Hotel – 19 April 2022

After today’s mad dash through Manchester (sorry about the short notice – Ed), over the border into Salford for tonight’s HEALTH show at the White Hotel, Jase W had a moment to take in the post-industrial decline aesthetic of the area surrounding the venue and he’d never have expected an actual gig venue in a place like this, especially in the Greater Manchester area.

Meshuggah – ‘Immutable’ (Atomic Fire)

Meshuggah at this point are essentially part of the bedrock of Djent/Math metal/Prog metal, whatever label you want to give them really! Essentially writing the rulebook of music that’s a pretty big chunk of the scene these days years before others started emulating their penchant for extended range guitars, low-tunings and eclectic time signatures and after a fairly large gap since their last effort, they’ve returned with Immutable.

Jade Warrior – ‘Jade Warrior’/’Last Autumn’s Dream’ (Cherry Red)

Original vinyl copies of many of the early 1970’s releases on the Vertigo ‘spiral’ label sell for pretty huge sums these days, and that’s certainly the case with those from cult British prog band Jade Warrior. Fortunately, if you want to check them out without shelling out hundreds of pounds, you can get these two new re-issues from Cheery Red of Jade Warrior’s 1971 self-titled debut, and their third album from 1972 ‘Last Autumn’s Dream’, both remastered from the original Vertigo master tapes with restored original album artwork and a booklet with new essay.
