Artwork for In Nomine Sanguinis by Theatres Des VampiresIt’s Halloween. Well, almost. The clock is ticking inexorably down towards our favourite day of the year, so what better time to saunter up to the box office at the Theatres Des Vampires for a bit of blood-soaked revelry? Don’t wear your best garb, though, ‘cos the blood definitely will be pouring down as these particular creatures of the night have their fangs well and truly sharpened and ready to tear out the throats of their unsuspecting customers.

‘In Nomine Sanguinis’ is a gloriously OTT slice of gothic rock opera: a rich, velvet-clad feast that melds elements of Cradle Of Filth with Andrew Lloyd-Weber to superb sonic effect. It is a huge-sounding, grandiose opus that offers massive swathes of symphonic pomposity of the sort that would make Paganini or Wagner put down their quills and invest more heavily in their pharmacological pursuits than their musical musings.

A lot of bands – well, their highly-paid PR agents anyway – use words such as “stylish” and “cinematographic” in their hyperbolae-filled press collateral. In this case, both adjectives are apt, as there is a sense of stylish expansiveness which fills every groove and inflects every word and note of this majestic, sumptuous sonic feast. There is also a sense of laconicism, in that the band have left space for the songs to breathe rather than fill them with needless fiddly bits, resulting in a vibe which, in places, is as much in the pop-rock territory of Paramore as it is the lascivious lushness of Lacuna Coil. The overall result is an elegant and eloquent album which rewards on every level.
