This young Brighton combo have been slowly creeping up on us over the past few months, and now seem to be constantly knocking on our door, what with this new single, a tour that kicks off at this weekend’s Steelhouse festival and a new album to follow next week.
Bassist Kirk Steaggles popped into the Club to give us the lowdown on the story behind the song:
When we were recording the new album in Eastbourne, we were sat outside a coffee shop and this woman came up to me and asked if I’m Bob Dylan. I told her I wasn’t, but she asked me again “are you Bob Dylan?” She kept going and coming back again and asking questions, then she came back to the coffee shop with two gifts and told me I had to pick one. One was nutmeg and the other was sardines, and I’m not keen on sardines, so I had the nutmeg. We didn’t think anything more of it. But… we’d told her we were recording in town.
Somehow [she] found the studio and she kept coming back and during that process she inevitably fell in love with Tom [Elliot – guitarist], and she was like “ohh you’ve got really beautiful eyes” so the final time she visited she left a package for Tom and it had a candle in it, and it was all a bit weird so we burnt it on the beach.
