Artwork for Riot Songs by The Crash LandingsFrom what I can gather, this ten-track offering from south coast punk crüe TCL has been kicking around for a while, but has taken some time to find its way across the Oirish Sea to ÜRHQ, so it didn’t exactly land with a crash, never mind a bang or a wallop…

Nevertheless, it did set off a riot in our ears, with its mixture of old school ’77 rawness, early ’80s ska and riotous folk-infused punk, bringing to mind the sounds of the likes of classic genre proponents such as GBH and UK Subs as much as more latter day proponents such as the two Franks (that’s Carter and Turner) and cheekier counterparts like Gogol Bordello.

As with most punk bands, the Landings aren’t afraid to tackle serious socio-political and life issues, and do most effectively so on the the rambunctious ‘We Stand As One’ and the magnificent closer ‘Sister’, but manage to do so in a which is also entertaining and more than capable of filling dance floors the Über Kingdom over.

All in all, ‘Riot Songs’ is a very decent collection of punk rock songs. They don’t deviate too much from the expected generic norm, but they do deliver in terms of passion and commitment, and you can’t really ask for much more than that…
