This self-titled debut album from ÜS-based reggae-rooted, punk-flavoured quartet The Calamatix is a fine collection of sunshine sounds written by talented singer Raylin Joy, and Rancid guitarist Tim Armstrong, plus one carefully chosen cover version, released through Armstrong’s Hellcat Records imprint.
With Raylin Joy joined by drummer Clarence “Pocket” Kidd III, guitarist Adam Porris and bassist William “Matty” Taylor, the album was recorded in a mere three days, which contributes to it’s free-flowing, vibrant and natural vibe.
‘Love, Lies & Alibis’, ‘Believe It Or Not’, ‘Before It Stops’ and the skankin’ ‘Dread’ are all quality slices of sunshine sounding reggae, whilst the likes of the excellent ‘Still Rudy’, ‘Rootstyle’, ‘Book Of Love’ and the Two-Tone flavoured ‘Lady’ veer between rock solid rocksteady, and high energy up-tempo ska, with the very catchy ‘Phone Call’ having a particularly vintage ska sound to it.
Elsewhere, previous Singles Club Daily Pick ‘Boom Bap’ has a more pop-leaning funky edge to it, and the funky tinge continues with the funky reggae fusion of ‘Enjoy This Life’. The aforementioned carefully chosen cover version is a pretty sensational reggae take on the Van Morrison classic ‘Tupelo Honey’, which closes the album perfectly.
‘The Calamatix’ is a vibrant and authentic fusion of vintage Jamaican styles, brought to life with great songs and great vocals from Raylin Joy. We may be at the end of the summer now, but this album is guaranteed to bring some sunshine into your life in any season.
