Madison Galloway is a self-supporting Canadian singer/songwriter from Ontario. With a bluesy vocal style and southern rock influences, the majority of the album is self penned. I can understand why the other hot Canadian property at the moment, The Commoners, decided to bring her along to support their upcoming tour.
Opening up with ‘The River’ a serious blues track including what sounds like a Hammond organ in the opening, her vocals remind me of Samantha Fish in parts and Elles Bailey in others (albeit not so gritty).
‘Whiplash’ is definitely where her similarity to Samantha Fish is most prominent and it’s a real catchy two minute upbeat track. It’s back to the keyboard for the opening of ‘Open Your Eyes’ before her vocals carry the bulk of the track, it is quite a demonstration of her songwriting and vocals from verses to chorus, there is some good guitar playing at the breakdown too. ‘Love Like Yours’ is a more bluesy track with her vocals in the lower range at the opening and through the verses, again another Samantha Fish sound to it.
There is not a bad track on this 11 track album, which are all a similar style and format to them with the exception of the one cover – a rather brave version of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’! Anyone who takes on Grace Slicks’ vocals on this track has some serious cojones!
It’s a shame the tour doesn’t come around my area this time around as I would definitely go along to see how these tracks would be performed live. Maybe next time?
