I knew there was something not quite right when I first cranked up the volume on this, the fourth full-length album from Lucifer Star Machine, and the first to cross my path. The distinctly London drawl of Tor Abyss did not sit with what else was going on behind it… it sounded different… so I did a little digging, and, lo, the light was switched on: for the past six years the band has been based in Hamburg, with yer man being the only émigré in the line-up. So, that would explain why this exudence of Lucifer’s exhalations sounds more distinctly in the mien of European turbo rock than Cocknabilly strut ‘n’ roll…
‘The Devil’s Breath’ is drawn (sic) straight from the sewers underneath the back-alley garages in which LSM’s sound was born and gestated. It is the sound of Motörhead jamming with the Ramone brothers, with Slim Jim and the Cats sitting in for the fun, while those Pussies from Nashville top up the steins and add in their tuppence worth from behind the bar before Messrs Monroe, Richards and Wood swagger in, confiscate the amps and turn everything up to 11, baby…
‘The Devil’s Breath’ ticks every box. Classy punk ‘n’ brawl riffs forcefully demand your attention, while melodies more infectious than this here beer bug embed themselves immediately into your aural cortexes, spreading this particular rock ‘n’ stomp virus quicker than a prostitute’s thighs. Thirteen may be an unlucky number for many, but in the case of this particular rock ‘n’ roll machine it is one that is right on the money, as they have well and truly hit the bullseye with this bakers’ dozen of groovalicous goodies.
Honestly, there is not one bad track on this album, and each and every single song will not only have you cranking the volume up to maximum but also dancing around your living room with such abandon that your nosey neighbours will swear you’ve discovered a new infection… and, of course, you have, as ‘The Devil’s Breath’ has been injected directly into your veins and taken you to a whole new level of happiness. As Herr Abyss tells us, ‘The Night is Young’…
