Artwork for Cleopatra by EverdawnSymphonic metal is a particular favorite of mine. Especially when there is heavy use of operatic vocals. There is something about the genre that just feels so epic and bigger than everything else. With the big musical movements and the powerful vocals, it is a genre that can both dominate with an epic score washing over you or lighten into a soft soothing melody that tells you a story either directly or through the instrumentation. When done well it can totally draw you in and demand your attention. It can be an experience that requires reflection and reward you for the endeavor. So, the question is where does ‘Cleopatra’ stack up in this genre of giants?

Starting with the vocals, we have a style that is rock solidly operatic. The tone is huge and has a ton of presence. There is wonderful delivery giving a strong presence to every track. That being said it is not totally perfect. There were a couple of times where on particularly high notes the tone would get a little harsh. I tried multiple headphones and speakers to make sure it was not just a peak in my gear but it persisted. It is not enough to ruin the experience by any means but I did notice it enough to feel the need to test with other headphones. I would have liked to see those rough notes polished up a bit. That being said though the rest of the whole vocal experience is very well done.

The instrumentation is exactly what you would expect. While not blazing any new ground it is a pretty good example of the genre. You have the usual drums, bass, and guitar that is in everything but also the addition of other instruments common with symphonic metal. Unfortunately, it does at times feel like the more symphonic elements get a little lost in the mix. Not too badly just enough for me to notice. Other than that like I said above it is a good example of the genre.

While Everdawn is not going to reshape the genre with Cleopatra I do think it is a good addition to the genre and to your collection if you are wanting to add some more to your playlists. I do think things were played a little safe at times. With all that power in the vocals, I would have loved to hear more from the symphonic elements of the instrumentation. Then have that be contrasted by the guitars and bass. I think that could have complemented the strengths of the vocal style better. As it stands though it is still a very good addition to anyone’s music library.
