After maintaining self-imposed radio silence for something like six years, this Swedish alt-rock crew have come storming back with an album which, in my personal opinion, puts a lot more high profile genre contemporaries such as Alter Bridge in the darkest and shadiest of corners (a controversial statement in itself, given that DQ is the Über Kingdom’s #1 Kennedy/Tremonti fan so I’m probably getting the “all picture no sound” treatment until the next AB album comes out to try and prove me wrong).
Despite having built massive momentum with four albums in just six years, culminating in 2018’s brilliant ‘Panoptical’, the guys took the brave decision to step back, examine where they had come from and where they intended to go, regroup and concentrate on producing the best album of music they could possibly give to the rock ‘n’ roll hungry (and critical) Überverse…
Well, the good news is that they have most probably done that and fulfilled their ambition, as ‘The World…’ is an absolutely immense album, in every sense of the word, from beginning to end.
There are moments of huge powerful metal punchers, such as the impactful opener ‘Original Sin’ and the absolutely massive ‘My Heaven My Hell’, which contrast with the equally powerful pathos of the likes of ‘Desolation’, on which Jan Hilli shows the likes of David Draiman how to deliver a power ballad from the darkest recesses of both his heart and soul.
This is a perfectly delivered album. One on which it is impossible to find a fault. It covers all of the emotions, from the depths to the highs. The songwriting is impeccable, the delivery even more so. The world may never have been enough for DoJ before, but it certainly is theirs for the taking now, even if James Bond decides to try and get in the way…
