By Monk
The band’s first new music since 2019, this four-track EP is the opening chapter in a two-part vade mecum for Cold In Berlin, seeing the band taking a denser but more ethereal approach to their music as they explore the fragility of the human soul and the delicate balance between loss and healing, grief and growth via lyrical themes that dance around subjects such as sex, murder, suicide, broken dreams and ultimately redemption.
‘The Body…’ is a disturbing listen, dark and intense, introspective and intimidating in its intimacy, mysterious and brooding, delivering moments of utter depression and desolation combined with ones of sheer fucking heavy brutality that challenge and coerce in equal measure.
Drawing ideas as much from classic krautrock as from post-punk, doom and gothic romanticism, CIB combine swathes of synth-infused dark pop audioscapes with stabbing metallic guitar riffs to sublime effect, in the process providing an experience that is as hypnotic as watching a broiling Icelandic lava flow inexorably inching its way, millimetre by millimetre, but being unable to turn and run to safety as you are entranced by the inevitability that it will engulf you. It is powerful, hypnotic stuff.
I look forward to the next chapter.
