So as luck would have it, a band I’m a huge fan of, CLT DRP, is playing a few shows in my new adopted home and I couldn’t resist getting down for a show but I could have done with actually checking the distance before committing. Anyway I’ve gotten myself on the train and down to The Hague to Paard Cafe for CLT DRPs show despite them not starting until 22:00! Suppose I’ll just need to deal with being a little tired at work tomorrow.
It’s probably worth pointing out that this might be a bit of a shorter write-up than normal as it’s only CLT DRP tonight with about an hour long set, so let’s see what happens eh?
It’s quite odd that I have a very similar vibe from this venue in The Hague that I did to the last venue I saw CLT DRP at in Manchester, The Deaf Institute. Very much that sort of indie bohemian aesthetic, feels very familiar to me and definitely the right sort of place to see some loud electro punk.
As it’s a mix of a free show, in The Hague and late on a Sunday, the crowd is a little sparse but not like it’s going to spoil my enjoyment! A relatively quiet walk on and this is going to be a bit more interesting I think! ‘Cake 4 The Women’ as the second song in is an interesting choice as well as it’s my favourite song and I’m kinda hoping that eventually becomes a big set ender someday! Every time I see these guys it always astounded at the sort of noise they put out, it’s so raw and loud, with the vocals an even mix between punky shouting and tasteful melodies, the drums grooving and relentless and then whatever the fuck their guitarist is doing between playing their guitar and pedalboard.
It really speaks to a band’s professionalism when they’re not discouraged by a sparse crowd though, CLT DRP are putting everything into this performance in the same way they would when I’ve seen them at super busy shows. This sort of thing is why CLT DRP are so high on my list of bands to see any time I can, I genuinely don’t know any other band that sounds like them, the energy they’re putting out at this show is unreal, when they hit the heavier parts of their songs you can feel the wall of sound hit you like a ton of bricks.
Also can we have some appreciation for a song lyric like “I put makeup on and masturbate, so I look good when I fuck myself” because my God, I can imagine that turns some heads if they’d not see CLT DRP before. ‘Where The Boys Are’ sounds every bit as thunderous as ever with the cacophonous noise while Annie screams the chorus of “I wanna be where the boys are!”: love it. ‘DAILY AFFIRMATIONS’ sounds bloody fantastic as well, massively bombastic and even a bit funky in parts, easily another favourite off the new album! Finally finishing with their new album opener, ‘NEW BOY’, another fantastic example of their discordant style of music, and wrapping up a fantastic set that shows why CLT DRP are just so damn interesting.
Absolutely worth the trip over to The Hague to catch this show and it seems they’ve won over quite a few new fans as well. Brilliant band!
