Since COVID, the Steelhouse aficionados have been treated to a revisiting of the annual festival to reminisce on the successes of the annual sojourn up the mountain and also pre-announce some of the following year’s festival. This year was no exception. However, it had already been announced that following the early passing of the Steelhouse legend Bernie Marsden, that the Friday would be respectfully called Berniefest. But, what else did Max and Mikey have in store for us during their fourth Away Day trip to the Welsh capital? David O reveals all…

A slightly different gig than the previous night’s psychedelia shenanigans, this evening’s jaunt across to Manchester sees the big man take in a fatal fourway of the finest death metal around in Stormruler, Ingested, Dark Funeral and Cannibal Corpse. 6pm doors is an early start but it doesn’t seem to deter what is a half full room for Stormruler, growing to a hefty 2/3 by the end of their set!

Another journey across the East Lancs sees DJ Astrocreep take in the delights of Dream Theater for the first time, with the prog metal masters long being a must-see band for him. An all-seated gig – becoming more and more common with a lot of the bands he likes – means plenty of opportunity to concentrate on the music, too!

Florida groove metallers Trivium kicked off their ‘Dead Men And Dragons’ European tour run with back-to-back shows at Dublin University’s The Helix, before heading north to Belfast for the first of their ÜK dates with a triumphant return to the city’s historic Ulster Hall. They brought along Sheffield monsters Malevolence – winners of ÜR’s 2022 ‘Album Of The Year’ poll – for the ride, which resulted in possibly the biggest circle pit generated in the venue’s 200-year old history. We were there to record the onstage action:

As Kris E was driving to the Avid Xchange Music Factory to her familiar haunt The Fillmore, the following song lyric was stuck in her head. “We need some money! (We need some money!) I’m talkin’ about moolah y’all (I’m talkin’ about moolah y’all!)” Now, if you’re a fan of a certain band then you absolutely know at this point who she was going to see. That’s right, she was headed to see Clutch and it had been a while since she’d seen them so she was definitely pumped up for the show….

This was supposed to be the second of two dates on the island of Ireland by Lancastrian thrash veterans Xentrix, making a welcome return to these shores after far too long away… but the curse of Friday the 13th had put the kibosh on the first show in Dublin, after their van took it upon itself to lock all their gear in the back. Fortunately for the Belfast crowd, however, their quest to find a locksmith north of the border proved a lot more fruitful than that down south and so, in the best showbiz tradition, this three-band thrash fest went ahead, thus warming the cockles of our hardened metallic hearts on what turned out to be a surprisingly chilly spring Saturday night.
