If you’re looking for some heavy alt-metal with major prog stoner rock vibes, Canyon has you covered! This dynamic trio from down under (Melbourne, Australia) just released their debut EP, ‘Static’, which is a sonic journey that will transport you back to the heyday of bands like Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine.
‘Insane’ kicks off the EP with huge, crunchy riffs and a driving force of percussion coupled with the killer vocals of Alex Duin (bass/vocals). Don’t let this burst of energy fool you though, because right afterwards comes ‘Keep Me Waiting’, which is six and a half minutes of in-your-face alt rock nostalgia with plenty of jamming out that makes you want to crank up your speakers and join in the fun. I was definitely banging my head along around the 4:30 mark.
‘Gone Before Your Time’ takes a much different approach (think along the lines of Tool and Deftones) and fits perfectly in the middle of the EP. Starting off with shimmering clean guitar, courtesy of Dalton Courtney, and slowly building into a force to be reckoned with around halfway through, with a bone-crushing bridge that could make your walls shake. Song after song, David Collopy (Drums), is the driving force of the band, which transitions perfectly into ‘Minority Outspoken’. Here’s where the RATM vibes really start to kick in! With thunderous percussion and super tight bass and guitar riffs, there’s no doubt Tom Morello would be proud! The track ‘Static’ brings everything full circle with soaring vocals mixed with the band’s signature heavy and ambient sound.
