Call Me Amour artworkCall Me Amour have dropped themselves a brand-new EP with five tracks on it and from the times I’ve seen these before a while back supporting Pop Evil, they left quite an impression with their fun, super poppy vibe. So given all that I wasn’t going to pass off a chance to give their new material a spin before hopefully catching them again in the future.

‘Happy Hell’ kicks off pretty heavily with the fat riffs that I remember them kicking out and  it’s super energetic right from the moment I pressed play, quite happy with how bouncy it is from the beginning. It’s gone straight into the sort of big singalong with the chorus and memories of that previous show come flooding back so this already seems like a good entry to expand their catalogue a bit. It’s always a good sign when you find yourself bobbing your head along so quickly to a bunch of new music.

‘Bloom’ reminds me quite heavily of STARSET right from the start; it’s so about the mix of the filtered vocals along with like a really heavy electronic glitchy kind of backing. It’s also worth noting this song has Scott Kennedy from Bleed From Within which is a fantastic vocal feature as well. He appears just as we move towards the back half of the song to really drive up the hype before dropping into a massive breakdown riff. This is like a top class way to build up to a peak and reminds me a lot of Architects doing a very similar thing with Winston from Parkway Drive.

‘Good Day’ actually sounds a little bit mathy, it’s quite a shift of gears from the familiar metal sound of the previous two songs and from what I remember them doing in the past as well. Also featuring another familiar vocalist which is Mikey Chapman from Mallory Knox. I suppose that might also explain this sort of sound that this song has overall as well, it’s fairly ‘bright’ in it’s feel and leans super hard on the pop side of things compared to the previous two tracks and to me feels like this might end up being the big one for this EP.

‘Where’s The Chemistry?’ returns to the more familiar riffy style but also feels fundamentally very different to the others in it’s own right. And in this case it reminds me a lot of Dead Letter Circus with it’s heavy synth use and staccato style bass during the verses and more heavier elements in the chorus. The shift between an airy atmospheric verse and hard hitting chorus put to fantastic use, another great example of Call Me Amour’s use of melody that still delivers punchy riffs.

And finally ‘Dreams’ to tie off this EP which ends this short journey on a more somber note that leads with a more subtle, stripped back introduction and verse before really turning up the aggression in the chorus. Again the calling card of Call Me Amour is easily accessible, riffy, poppy fun that never forgets to deliver massively energetic songs and the peak of ‘Dreams’ wraps up a fantastically fun taster of what’s to come in future from these.

I’m already hyped up for the next time I get to see them after getting stuck into this EP and it’ll be a guaranteed spin on my listening rotation once it goes out into the world. If you want a quick introduction to Call Me Amour, let this be it. For a five song EP, it’s massively diverse in it’s sound and showcases several facets of their sound and if you get to see these live, you’ll want to know the words because their singer has a habit of getting stuck into the crowd and you’ll want to be there for it.
