Raketkanon – ‘RKTKN#3’ (Alcopop!)

If a song has a vocalist but no lyrics, is it an instrumental? This is the question you may ask upon hearing ‘RKTKN#3,’ the latest album from Belgian weirdos Raketkanon. Singer Pieter-Paul Devos performs every track in a made-up language, any real words that find their way into the mix are purely by accident. His voice accompanies a barrage of bizarre noise-rock comprising crushing synths, off-kilter guitar riffs and FX-heavy passages. They’re the spiritual successors to bands like The Melvins or Gang Of Four and this is probably the weirdest album you’ll hear in 2019.

JAWS – ‘The Ceiling’ (Self-Released)

A lot has changed since JAWS released their debut ‘’Be Slowly’ in 2014. From the prevailing atmosphere of the scene at the time, to the very country around them, the world has moved in a big way in just five years, particularly as so many great bands in the UK have decided to call it a day in response to an increasingly hostile world (in so, so many ways). As such, one could take the lofty dream-pop that the band evoked on that debut and equate it with an idea of escape, of release from a sense of anxiety which seems to permeate almost everywhere else, particularly when each of the band’s early songs felt so sunshine-ready, set to get any party going.

Idle Hands – ‘Mana’ (Eisenwald)

Portland based four-piece, Idle Hands, made a name for themselves with the release of their EP ‘Don’t Waste Your Time’ in 2018.  Within four months they were back in the studio putting together eleven tracks to form their debut album. ‘Mana’ is the culmination of eight months’ worth of work for Idle Hands, honing their brand of gothic infused heavy metal.
