DragonForce – ‘Extreme Power Metal’ (earMUSIC)

Like Jonny Bakes, we’re sure everyone will remember when DragonForce exploded in popularity back in 2007 when ‘Through the Fire and Flames’ featured as the end credits song of ‘Guitar Hero III’. At the time, for many people this was the most difficult song they had ever come across with the fast noodling of Herman Li shocking those who hadn’t yet explored the extremes of metal. Young JB was definitely one of those people and that probably explains why, to this day, he still has a real soft spot for power metal. It’s often cheesy and can be a little bit silly, but it’s near impossible to stay in a bad mood while listening to it, so it remains a staple in his record collection.

Bent Knee – ‘You Know What They Mean’ (InsideOut)

Bent Knee are a band that first came to our resident gigaholic’s attention when they supported Haken earlier this year, when they, unfortunately, went on late and only got to play half their set due to some quite bad set up mishaps, but the big lad could see just from that 20 minute set that they were quite batshittingly brilliant live – how would they fare when listened to at home is a much sterner test with our resident progster. Voice Of Ruin – ‘Acheron’ (Tenacity Records)

According to John B, ‘Acheron’ is everything you could want from a melodic death metal release. It is dark and heavy but is also nicely broken up at times with lighter more melodic segments. There is a good variety of speeds and tones throughout the album making it flow very well from track to track. It never gets too repetitive or stale. Everything feels very intentional and well thought out.
