Hildr Valkyrie – ‘Revealing The Heathen Sun’ (Moribund Records)

Jonny B recently had an album appear in front of him that claimed to be from the world’s first one-woman folk metal band, and his first thought was that it surely cannot be true. But then he put a little more thought into it and realized that he certainly couldn’t name any others, so perhaps that statement is true! Well, it turns out that this particular project has been going on for the best part of two decades but has somehow managed to fly below my radar to date. So, fortunately for Hildr Valkyrie, her 2017 sophomore album ‘Revealing The Heathen Sun’ is being given a second lease of life with its official worldwide release. Initially this album was released solely upon the population of Russia which, while a massive country, doesn’t quite get the exposure you might want! Particularly for a one-woman Nordic-themed folk metal project from Greece, which is quite the combination but something that has certainly grabbed JB’s attention.

Subterranean Masquerade – ‘Mountain Fever’ (Sensory)

John B loves it when he can say that an album is unlike anything he has heard before. Sure there are a lot of similarities to things he has heard but as a package, this is a new experience for him. This combination of styles and instruments defies all his expectations. That being said, bear with JB while he stumbles to try to explain what he loves about an album in a style he has never tried to put words to before. What a wonderful first exposure though.

The Über Rock Singles Club – Mayhem In May (Volume Two)

Well, it looks like the rays of light at the end of the dark tunnel that has been the past 14 months of isolation and generally being shit upon from great heights may be growing brighter day by day, with the vaccination programme being rolled out with increasing pace, trial live events taking place and the various roadmaps seeming to actually present some form of direction and pathway back to at least a semblance of the normality we enjoyed before the pandemic wrecked chaos on our collective and individual lives.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – SLEEP WAKER

As the rays of light at the end of the dark tunnel that has been the past 14 months of isolation and generally being shit upon from great heights grow brighter day by day, the rock ‘n’ roll year that is 2021 has somehow crept, crawled and sneaked deeper into its fifth month, with its DMs firmly planted in the mire and muck of the chaos around it, with a healthy slew of new music pinging itself our way, and especially the continuing tsunami of submissions we receive for our coveted ‘Video Of The Week’ award… Yes, as we’ve said on multiple occasions, one constant throughout the vagaries of inconsistent and often hard to stomach lockdowns is the amazing level of adaptive creativity that bands and video directors the length and breadth of the Überverse have continued to show, often in the most adverse of circumstances.

Chris Catalyst – ‘Kaleidoscopes’ (Self-Released)

The name Chris Catalyst should be as familiar to even the most passive of ÜR readers as your favourite pair of underpants – and if it isn’t, then you either don’t wear underpants or have been living in a state of rock ‘n’ roll-starved stasis for the better part of the past decade. After all, he is one of the hardest working men in Yorkshire, popping up more frequently than yer man in those bothersome internet adverts, having been involved at one time or another or in one shape or another with bands such as The Sisters Of Mercy, Ugly Kid Joe, Mariachi El Bronx and Terrorvision, as well as finding time to record and tour with his own band of troubadours, The Eureka Machines… It’s a work ethic he has continued during the various lockdowns, with a seemingly incessant stream of live streams and podcasts to both entertain us in our darkest hours but also convince us to part with thousands of our hard-earned (and, in many cases, dwindling) pounds to aid various charities – and, in between all of this, he’s also found the time to put together this, his inspirational second solo album…
