Artwork for Mountain Fever by Subterranean MasqueradeI love it when I can say that an album is unlike anything I have heard before. Sure there are a lot of similarities to things I have heard but as a package, this is a new experience for me. This combination of styles and instruments defies all my expectations. That being said, bear with me while I stumble to try to explain what I love about an album in a style I have never tried to put words to before. What a wonderful first exposure though.

There is such a variety in the musical style here at times getting quite heavy and at others softening up nicely. There is this interesting mix of metal mixed with this very middle eastern feeling and at times even a hint of Spanish-style guitar. Forgive me if that is not all that clear as those are not genres I’m overly familiar with but that is the vibe I am getting. There is such an interesting mix of instruments within every track such as violins and horns that are used in ways I had not considered. The precaution is also not what I would have expected. I can’t tell you what is going on there but it is different and I like it! Truly a unique experience.

The experience continues to surprise me with the vocals. At times we have a powerfully sung vocal that has a power metal kind of vibe but darkened a bit. Similar to what you hear from Kamelot. This is contrasted by both a softly sung vocal style and also a heavy dark screamed tone and even occasionally throat singing. It all comes together to create this really interesting experience that is well crafted, easy to follow, and really broadens my expectations. Just a cool experience from start to finish.

Clearly, this is one you should pick up. At first, I did not know what to make of it and was unsure if it was for me but as it went on there is so much evolution in every track and the whole experience is carefully crafted to keep your interest and it does flawlessly. This is a must-have experience and not one moment ever felt dull. You owe it to yourself to check this one out. The wonderful blend of experiences and styles is absolutely memorable and you will absolutely be missing out if you let this one slip by without giving it a listen.
