Artwork for Conjuring The New Apocalypse by AposentoJust days after the Spanish government eased some of the restrictions around the beer bug-induced lockdown, death metal veterans Aposento once again crawl their way out of the country’s northern wastelands with just their third album in their three-decade-long career (well, they did take a 15-year break in the middle of it). And the result is an album as dark as the wine of the Rioja region from which they hail…

With the band having stripped down to a four-piece for their last album (2017’s ‘Bleed To Death’) they have returned to a twin-guitar line-up, which they have honed with almost constant gigging the length and breadth of the Iberian peninsula. And the road miles are evident, as ‘Conjuring…’ is a tight and precise offering, very much in the classic DM mould, without straying too far from the (left-hand) path you would expect from a band so deeply rooted in the old-school sound.

Mark Berserk’s vocals positively ooze evil intent, while the guitars create riffs and harmonies that seethe and broil like pools of boiling lava ready to unleash themselves on the unsuspecting peasantry below. Behind all this, the drums snarl and snap, while the bass adds the necessary level of density which truly effective DM demands in order to work. And work this album indeed does, and every level. It’s not groundbreaking, and won’t win any accolades for innovation, but it concentrates on doing the job in hand and in so doing not only will it more than satisfy their blackened legions of existing fans but should help them to build on that base. Definitely worthy of the attention of any true DM aficionado.
