Chosen by Monk
My latest choice cut once again comes from a band featuring a man for whom I am amazed there are enough hours in the day to cater for all the various projects in which he is involved… Michael Smyth, something of a fairly ubiquitous figure on the Belfast scene, seems to have been in more bands than some of us have had pints on a Saturday night, but as if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy he is one of the hardest working promoters and press agents I know, constantly bombarding our inbox with details of bright shiny new acts to attract our magpie-like attention to such things…
And it’s definitely not a case of #LightsOut for the power trio as they release their second single, a four minute slice of melodic post-hardcore that recalls the intensity of At The Drive-In while embracing the melodic sensibilities of the likes of Alexisonfire and early 2000’s post-hardcore/emo.
The band told us:
The song is a religious metaphor for second chances, missed opportunities and remedied situations. The verses focus on flash point scenarios and crossroad moments where one choice leads you down one path and the other towards a completely different reality. The driving interplay of vocals are used to show the chaotic thought process being life choices, self doubt and gut feelings.
The release comes ahead of a trio of dates with Bannered Mare, which will see them play Roisin Dubh in Galway on Thursday 6 February, Dublin’s Workman’s Club on Friday 7 February and finally the Union Bar in their hometown of Belfast on Saturday 8 February.
