A statue commemorating Irish blues rock legend Rory Gallagher has been unveiled in the city he regarded as his second home, Belfast. However, it already has attracted massive controversy among fans.
One of the biggest criticisms of the statue – inspired by a January 1972 Melody Maker magazine cover image of Gallagher onstage at the Ulster Hall, outside which it stands – is that it shows Gallagher with a Fender Telecaster guitar rather than his trademark battered 1961 Stratocaster.
Another massive criticism is what is seen as its rather effeminate portrayal of “The G Man”, with at least one social media commentator remarking that he seems to be rather well endowed in the chest department.
