We may be less than a month into the new rock ‘n’ roll year, but we’ve already had a surprising number of videos already come our way – almost 100 of them in the past week alone – vying for the coveted title and virtual gong of being named our favourite… not the best, we stress, but our favourite…
Believe me, we do watch all of the submissions, and a lot of them are of an extremely high quality, but there can only ever be one winner…
And, to that end, this week’s selection is a powerful and visceral personal exorcism which really hit us between the eyes while simultaneously tugging on our heartstrings as Joel Holmqvist, the sole remaining member of Swedish melocore mob Aviana displays his ‘Obsession’ with addressing mental health issues in this darkly energetic standalone single which hints at the new direction he may well be taking with the latest incarnation of the project, which is further emphasized and extrapolated by the presence of four Ghost-like mysterious masked figures who may, or may not be, his new band mates.
The result is a cathartic and enervating audio-visual experience, with the sparse realism of the latter perfectly complementing the dense and emotional elements delivered in the former:
