Artwork for III by LuciferHaving relocated from Berlin to Stockholm in 2016, where she teamed up with Nicke Andersson (of The Hellacopters, Entombed, Imperial State Electric fame) for her second album, ultimately released two years later, Johanna Sadoni laid down a defiant marker for the blues-doom sub-genre, proving that it was possible to evoke the spirit of godfathers such as Black Sabbath with the psychedelic overtones of the likes of Blue Öyster Cult, the folksiness of early Heart – and still make it sound fresh, modern and relevant.

It is a path which both Sadoni and Andersson (now married) have continued to follow, with aplomb and panache, with this, what could have proven to be a troubled third album but instead reveals itself to be an accomplished, confident, mature and hugely enjoyable offering with narry a crack in the concrete of its solidity. ‘Lucifer III’ is, quite simply, a beautiful album – and I could quite easily end this review right there, right now. But, its majesty, its richness deserve more than just a handful of dismissive adjectives to be used as soundbites by their PR company (which they, hopefully, will be anyway).

‘Lucifer III’ is an album which is extremely hard, if not impossible, to pigeonhole, which is part of its attraction. Yes, there are elements of doom. Yes, there are elements of classic rock. Yes, there are elements of psychedelia. But they are all drawn together in a recipe that would make my mates Dave and Si proud to have concocted. And the end result is totally delicious, satisfying right down to the last morsel and leaving you wanting more – which, of course, you can get by hitting that “repeat” button… which is exactly what I have done… well, not before pouring another glass of cab sauv with which to wash down this richly rewarding aural experience.

‘Lucifer III’ is released today (Friday 20 March). You can get your copy HERE.
