Music Venue Trust logoHow do you make sure royalties reach the right creators? But without ripping off those who pay the royalties?

Those are the questions asked by the Music Venue Trust (MVT) in the latest edition of its #LastSafeSpace podcast.

In the ongoing wake of recent revelations about how the Performing Rights Society (PRS), the agency charged with transferring royalties from venues to artists, have been overcharging the former but not necessarily to the advantage of the latter by using out-dated and inaccurate monitoring techniques, MVT CEO Mark Davyd and rights management expert Gareth Kelly sat down with Ryan Edwards, CEO of the technology company Audoo to discuss why better data matters, how inaccurate reporting affects grassroots music venues, and what can be done to improve the system.

They explore the challenges facing music licensing and royalty collection in the grassroots music sector and discuss why inaccurate data can create problems for venues, songwriters and the wider live music ecosystem.

The episode also marks the announcement of a new partnership between MVT and Audoo. The collaboration will see Audoo’s music recognition technology installed in 120 grassroots music venues across the ÜK to help build a clearer picture of what music is being performed and help ensure payments reach the right creators.
