Artwork for The Path To Destruction by GodethThey must be putting something in the water, and ergo the beer, in Yorkshire, as it seems to be producing some of the most brutal, extremely noisome and viciously intentive metal bands around at the moment, a growing list to which Leeds hardcore deathgrinders Godeth can now finally proudly add their name with this declarative and defiant debut EP.

I say “finally” because it has been a long road for the five piece, formed back in 2018 and subsequently (pandemic not prevailing) beset by problems and setbacks, before they finally made those of us who pay attention to what is going on in the underground scene sit up and take notice last with two searing back-to-back singles, the appropriately titled ‘Scald’ and the contrastingly named ‘Solace’, the latter of which is included as the centerpiece of this long overdue six-track mini album.

Right from the off, Godeth test our resolve to stick their unrelenting pace with the suitably short sharp shock that is ‘Test My Resolve’ before really showing their mettle and worth by delivering a complete ‘Coup de Grace’, complete with some of the most iconic blastbeats you will possibly hear this year. It’s brutal, yes, but it’s also magnificently majestic, a totally titanic slice of ‘core-infused death groove worthy of the finest exponents of the genre.

Godeth may be leading us down a path of destruction, but it is a journey I for one will gladly follow them on, with or without a map to find the way back… ‘cos I’m enjoying the soundtrack to the destination too much to care \m/
