Well according to South Wales rockers Deathtraps, it’s their new album ‘Appetite For Prescription’ – and, after one quick listen to this slab of filthy, nasty punk-infused rock’n’roll, you’re probably not going to argue…

Hailing from the steel towns of South Wales, the press release for this three-piece rock’n’roll machine points out that they contain one Cardiff City fan and one Swansea City fan amongst their ranks, so quite how they manage to co-exist without punching lumps out of each other could be a mystery, but then again this album is the perfect soundtrack required if you do have the desire to punch lumps out of each other.

The likes of ‘Let’s Kill Rock’n’Roll’, ‘Red Eyes, Black Kisses’ and ‘She Said’ are fast, punchy and very catchy belters all delivered with an element of cheeky tongue-in-cheek humour, as are the turbo-charged, full throttle ‘Still Fucked Up’ and ‘Rip ‘Em Off’, two super-punchy and super-nasty album highlights. ‘Imitator’ and ‘Let It Burn’ veer in a beefy, hard rock riffing direction, whilst ‘Candy Darlin’ throws a bit of a curveball into the mix, sounding like The Cars on steroids.

Album closer ‘Too Much Is Never Enough’ signs the album off in suitably scuzzy, pummelling, anthemic rock’n’roll fashion with a definite hint of Motörhead to it. Deathtraps can certainly pen a decent tune, and in fact there’s eleven of them on offer here, without a single duffer.

If you like the kind of high octane, no frills dirty rock’n’roll pioneered by the likes of the Stooges and the MC5, developed by the likes of Zeke and Turbonegro, and practised today by bruisers like the Hip Priests, then ‘Appetite For Prescription’ is just what the doctor ordered. A perfect Christmas gift for your local serial killer if ever there was one. Seriously good, and fun, stuff.
