THE BIG ÜBER RÖCK INTERVIEW – REN MARABOU
In the year now known as CE791, longships containing fierce, long-haired warriors from the far-off northlands of Scandinavia first appeared off the coast of Ireland, their occupants seeking what they had sought and found elsewhere around the periphery of the North Sea and beyond – plunder and prisoners. Over the course of the next half a century or so, the raiders gradually transitioned into settlers, founding the island’s first permanent settlements in the likes of Dublin and Limerick, and by the time their Norman descendents likewise came calling, some 200 years later, they had integrated seamlessly into the local population. Now, a millennium further along the timeline, a new band of raiders, wanderers and warriors have appeared on the horizon, descending from the north west of the Emerald Isle to pillage our hearts, souls and eardrums with equally lethal intent, their axes creating music rather than spilling blood but their war drums still sounding loud and proud, a defiant declaration.

Celtic folk punk troubadour No Murder No Moustache has never exactly been short on heart, but new album ‘As Everything Else Decays’ feels like the moment Owen Crawford properly swings for the fences. Framed as his most personal work to date, it welds kitchen‑sink reflection to barricade‑ready resistance songs, all while keeping a pint‑in‑the‑air sense of mischief close at hand.

Cosmic Dross was back in the Netherlands and after his last journey with HENGE in Melkweg, Jase W was absolutely buzzed to be able to take another trip with these intergalactic emissaries. When you bring together a group of musicians that features luminaries from the alt-pop, grunge and stoner scenes, and between them have been responsible for producing possibly upwards of a hundred albums, you know it is destined to be something special… and so it has proven with Drink The Sea, a collaboration between REM guitarist Peter Buck, ex-Mad Season/Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, QOTSA’s Alain Johannes and Mark Lanegan’s long-time collaborator Duke Garwood.

Another new venue ticked off the list in the Netherlands, dB’s in Utrecht for a band Jase W has been wanting to see for a very long time, Gnome! This has been long overdue after he found ‘Wenceslas’ randomly on YouTube a few years back and getting fully addicted to their funky take on stoner rock.

It seems Jase W is visiting all the venues he’s never been to before this month and in this case as rather than being at the infamous 013 venue in Tilburg, he’s treading new ground at Hall Of Fame. Not only that but a double bill of bands he’s found through friends at festivals such as RADAR and ArcTanGent, in this case it’s Vower and Giant Walker. It’s fantastic that bands such as these are jumping across the channel to give the mainlanders a dose of brilliantly proggy metal from old Blighty, so as if our man in Europe would pass off a chance like this even if it is at the other end of the country.
