Artwork for On Fences by Between BodiesStarting out in early 2019, emo rock quartet Between Bodies from Cologne, Germany have wasted no time putting together their debut EP, ‘On Fences’. Packed with sincere heartfelt lyrics and catchy punk rock riffs, Between Bodies is reminiscent of emo giants such as Moose Blood, The Gaslight Anthem, and Alkaline Trio, all while still maintaining their own unique sound. Their debut EP had its digital release in December 2019 with a proper vinyl debut slated for 22 May via I.Corrupt.Records in cooperation with Krod Records. So, what exactly makes Between Bodies debut EP stand out in the crowd?

Starting off with ‘Fire Alarm’, the tone is instantly set with tight midwestern emo style guitar riffs and thunderous percussion. Layered perfectly with raw poetic lyrics that are instantly relatable, this is one of the stand out tracks on the EP. It’s clear that a lot of time and effort went into these recordings. Each song is richly textured with dynamics and hauntingly beautiful lyrics in addition to lush melodies, which can be seen prominently in ‘Death To A Child’. The band’s sound is both raw and refined all at the same time, making for an enjoyable listening experience.

Another stand out track for me is ‘Great’ due to it’s upbeat sound mixed with relatable lyrics. The chorus is very well written and introspective with the lyrics, “You feel like you`re empty clothing, a bodiless voice / A nameless something, a disembodied noise / And I would send my condolences, / But then art never came from happiness / And you wanna be great”. These words instantly stuck with me after hearing them and the song gets better with each play. Every song on the EP has its place and flows well from one to the next. Between Bodies has the perfect combination of heartfelt rock songs combined with excellent production making this a debut EP to remember.
