It’s hard to believe it’s been a fortnight since the Singles Club last opened its virtual doors and we fired up the death decks with a selection of the finest single-track releases to have come our way in recent weeks. Lesley Mac reckons that it’s the perfect time for US heavy metal masters Lamb Of God to emerge from the ether. After a five-year album hiatus, they return in the midst of worldwide political unrest, dissent and controversy to reinstate their dominance. With seven albums to their name already, the fact that the new release is self-titled is indicative of a self-assured identity. Yes, they may have toured with word renowned bands like Metallica and Slayer but they were co-headliners with Megadeth this year, are also Grammy Award winners and so the five-piece of Blythe (vocals), Morton (guitar),  Willie Adler (guitar), Campbell (bass) and Art Cruz on drums (replacing  founding member Chris Adler who left citing creative differences) are themselves a phenomenon not to be ignored.

MalefistuM is a new project put together by guitarist Jens Faber, perhaps better known as the driving force behind German power metallers Dawn Of Destiny, with whom he has released seven albums without managing to break into the upper echelons of the genre’s wannabe elite. This new project sees him walk a slightly different path, with an emphasis much more on the DM end of the spectrum, thanks largely to the involvement of vocalist Melissa Bonny, who is one of those female vocalists with the rare ability to switch between purgatorial death growls and high-flown operatics quicker than most of us can neck a shot of Buckie…
