The history of rock ‘n’ roll is littered with tales of bands splitting up and then getting back together again. Often, such reunions are often for the most cynical of reasons – usually money. But, occasionally – very occasionally – one comes about that is for the most honourable of reasons. And the latter is exactly why south Wales post-hardcore legends Funeral For A Friend came out of retirement this past week: to pay tribute to a man who could only be described as their biggest fan (both figuratively and literally, to quote the band), who died over the summer after a short battle with illness, and to raise money for his wife and three young sons by playing three shows, including two in their hometown of Cardiff…

The O2 Academy in Sheffield is fast becoming a second home for our Special Correspondent in Steel City. Only one stage at the eighth instalment of HRH Prog, though – but it is being held simultaneously, Leeds/Reading Festival style, in London and Sheffield, line ups swapping over the two venues. So, Saturday’s line up in Sheffield will be the Sunday line up in London, and vice versa.

Kris Barras Band/The Davy K Project – Belfast, Empire Music Hall – 30 October 2019

It has been a busy year for MMA fighter turned blues rock guitarist Kris Barras. One characterized by what seems to have been a nonstop touring schedule, either as a support act or a headliner in his own right. Add in a teaming up with ZZ Top legend Billy Gibbons and his Supersonic Blues Machine and a string of festival appearances, and it would seem he’s hardly ever been off stage. But, in the midst of all that live activity, he managed to record and release his third solo album, the ÜR-approved ‘Light It Up’, which he has just spent six weeks back out on the road promoting. In fact, this return to Belfast, just three months after he supported Black Stone Cherry just down the road at the historic Ulster Hall, was supposed to be the last night of the tour’s UK leg: but, illness had forced him to postpone one of the earlier dates, so there are still some road miles to come…
