The train system was a mess, it was bloody freezing and this show was on the other side of the country to Jase W again but it wasn’t going to stop him making the trip! A tour like this stuffed with three absolutely fucking fantastic bands isn’t to be sniffed at, especially when it’s being headlined by Orbit Culture who have flown up the ranks in terms of status, and for good reason.

The Belfast grunge-gazers continue to explore new sonic boundaries, having leaned into desert rock and garage-pop respectively on their previous two releases. On ‘Empathology’ the band further expand their sonic palette as they bask at the altar of 90s flannel soaked distortion, with a track that sounds like ‘Cannonball’ by The Breeders…if The Breeders were cooler, moodier, goth kids fighting Veruca Salt and Jack Off Jill.

Shadowman is a new collaborative project from songwriter John J Presley, producer Ben Hillier and radio presenter Danielle Perry. A musical collective drawn from mutual inspirations and a desire to create freely and quickly with musicians on the same page. Together, it’s a tapestry of sonics, from crunching guitars to sweeping orchestration; death march brass to motorik drum machines, vocal interplay and post-rock build-ups.

AVRALIZE ‘LIMINAL’ (ARISING EMPIRE)

The musical world that Jase W exists in at the moment seems often dominated by Australia and more recently Denmark for producing proggy metal that digests vast swathes of pop, funk and sometimes soul elements. Yet recently I feel like there’s this growing monster lurking in Germany where younger bands are deciding to stick their fingers up at established convention and turning the approach to what can be considered heavy music totally on its head with doing more than just elements and going full send with bridging the gap between where the fat riff is and sounding like a full on Eurodance song.
