Chosen by Monk

This Mancunian alt-rock/grunge hybrid cuts straight through social expectations, silence and submission, blending gritty distortion, emotionally loaded vocals and confrontational lyricism into a track that feels both raw and cinematic.

The trio, who have re-united a decade after taking their battered Peugeot 206 off the road and have a new EP on the way in the not-too-distant future, dialled up ÜRHQ to talk a bit more about the song:

‘Nikol’ tells the story of a young girl taught to be quiet, presentable and easy to ignore, until that pressure turns into something unstoppable. The song explores themes of repression, identity, and the cost of being pushed to the margins, transforming vulnerability into power. It’s dark, cathartic, and unfiltered, with a narrative edge that makes it feel more like a short film than a standard rock release.

[It] isn’t about revenge, it’s about what happens when you underestimate someone for too long.
