Crossfire – ‘Switch To Reset’ (Wormholedeath Records)

We first came across Dublin thrashers right on the cusp of the Covidications which threw the Überverse into chaos back in March 2020, when they were the last band to play a Belfast stage before the world went into the enforced lockdown that dominated, and ruined, our lives for the next 18 months or so… Now, more than three years later, they have finally gotten around to releasing their debut album – and it is definitely a case of them setting the ‘Switch To  Reset’ with this declarative eight song collection.

Helmet – Manchester, Club Academy – 12 December 2023

Transport issues abounded once more as DJ Astrocreep headed across the M62 to his second home of Manchester for a second gig in successive nights, as he took in the mighty Helmet for only the second time. Having previously travelled up to Glasgow to catch them, due to a schedule clash, it’s good to see them on what feels like home turf. Grabbing a pint as he arrived, the big lad found there are surprisingly no supports for the show, so quickly head on down to claim his seat and prepare for the show.

X-Ray Spex – ‘Conscious Consumer’ (Do Yourself In)

Back in 1995, the wonderful and sadly missed Poly Styrene put a new version of punk legends X-Ray Spex together and recorded a new album, the second and final X-Ray Spex album, ‘Conscious Consumer’. It received a limited CD release at the time, but due to Styrene suffering serious injuries from an accident, the band were unable to promote it and it quickly disappeared. Officially unavailable for the past 27 years, now it finally gets the proper release it deserves.
