The press email John B was sent with this album states that Detritus draws inspiration from Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Huge bands. Monsters in the music industry that pretty much everyone knows and loves. There is just one problem. JB is one of the strange people who don’t like any of those bands. We know, we know, bring out the guillotine he probably deserves it but they just have never been his style. So with that, he had low expectations for ‘Myths’; however he was pleasantly surprised. John Carpenter’s reputation as a film maker, both in the underground and in commercial film circles, remains legendary. His uncanny blend of horror, sci-fi and all-out action, not to mention his choices of actors and their memorable characters, make for unique and highly entertaining genre cinema. Perhaps the one element that viewers overlook simply because it’s a natural element of movies is the soundtrack to his films, either composed or co-composed and performed by the man himself. In hindsight, his synth-driven soundscapes are as integral to the overall experience as the script or performances, and they have inspired many, many soundtrack composers and synthwave artists over the years.

It may have been a few years since Josh, Nick, Brant and friends played right through the night in the desert but the current lockdown is making people have to be resourceful about how they’re going to safely organise any gig or live stream. Step forth five of the foremost bands of that scene, or at least some that were involved at the time. Well, 2021 may have only taken its first faltering steps into its second month but already it is looking as if it as going be as much of a shitstorm of a year, if not more so, than its predecessor, with the Government apparently losing the war with the pan(dem)ic and “fighting back” with renewed, and even more stringent, lockdowns in place the length and breadth of the Über Kingdom. But, with BoJo’s much vaunted pathway out of the crisis still some way off, and the summer festival season already in severe doubt following the cancellation of Glastonbury and other events looking set to fall like the proverbial dominos, at least 2021 is sharing something more positive in common with 2020, in that it already has produced some terrific new music, with the promise of plenty more to come, if the if the inbox here at ÜRHQ is anything to go by…
