Perhaps it was just the fact that sitting in the sun for his review writing had got him over-excited, but this album is one of those rarities that really hooked Jonny B from the first listen. But then it seems that Johan Kihlberg has set himself up what can only be described as a supergroup for this latest work to come out under the Impera brand. With names like John Levén (Europe) and Snowy Shaw (ex-Sabaton) dominating the line-up, it’s of little surprise that we’re dealing with some serious music with a pedigree like this!

Climb through the walls, tilt the structure; our putrid, morally bereft and bilious systems need to be taken out from the inside. This is the gist of what Danish synth-punk noise trio Hiraki want to convey in ‘Stumbling Through The Walls’, their second album. It’s a bit more aggressively put than your usual punk message and given that the vehicle of delivery was honed, thrashed out and produced by the band themselves in their ‘Cube of Eternal Doom’ studio in Skødstrup, central Denmark, it begins to feel like the plot of a dark yet ominously realistic science-fiction novel.

This compilation album does exactly what it says in the title. It is the latest in a series of compilation albums focussing attention on the doom and stoner scenes in various locations around the Überverse, with previous editions having profiled both emergent and established acts in the likes of The Netherlands, Russia (both of whom have scenes so active they’ve actually both had two compilations dedicated to their territories), Belgium, Greece, various quadrants of the Ünited States, Australia and even Peru, as well as England and Wales. Now, with this iteration, the curators have turned their collective attention to last of the once independent kingdoms of Great Britain, heading north of the border to the land of Alba to find out what is going on there…
