Annihilator – ‘Metal II’ (earMUSIC)

Albums from classic Canadian thrash bands are coming along like London buses right now. Last week Jim R reported on the rather fine new album from Voivod, and this week it’s the (sort of) new one from the mighty Annihilator. Kicking off an extensive reissue campaign of many of the albums from Annihilator’s illustrious back catalogue is ‘Metal II’, although this isn’t a straight-ahead reissue of the band’s 2007 ‘Metal’ album. Instead, it’s a pretty radical re-working of the original album, retaining the original’s guest appearances, but re-recording a lot of the music with new vocalist Stu Block, and a certain Dave Lombardo on drums…

Deathbell – ‘A Nocturnal Crossing’ (Svart Records)

A sophomore release is not a bad place to find a band. You have a bit of back material to listen for any progression of sound and two opportunities to look at how well the band write and influence each other. French psych-doom may not be a massive thing at the moment, but with albums like A Nocturnal Crossing, this could well shuttle in some exciting times for a band that sound like the bastard child of an unholy early Black Sabbath and Jefferson Airplane union.

Brood of Hatred – ‘The Golden Age’ (Gruesome Records)

One of the things Jonny B loves about working with Über Rock is that he gets a deeper understanding of just how international the metal scene has become. He’s picked up bands from deepest Africa through to India and beyond, and yet there are still more surprises popping up as he continues this musical adventure. Today’s unexpected metal country is Tunisia, for which Metal Archives lists dozens of bands; but, for the purposes of this review, JB is interested in a certain well-established band known as Brood of Hatred.
