Eternal Closure – ‘At The Center of It All – Chapter I’ (Self-Released)

When the EP dropped into ÜR NKOTB Jamie B’s inbox, he didn’t know what to expect as he’d never heard of Eternal Closure before. The only information he had to go on was if you are a fan of Trivium, Jinjer or Killswitch Engage you will enjoy this band. The reality, however, was that only one of those bands is comparable. If JB had to compare them to any band, which our latest recruit hates doing because a band should be able to stand on their own merits, it would be Scar Symmetry. The intricacy of the guitars, the juxtaposition of the clean and harsh vocals, and the groove of the drums/bass all melded into one pretty epic record.

The Godfathers – ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ (Godfathers Recordings)

It won’t be too long before we’re commemorating the 40th anniversary The Godfathers, who rose from the ashes of the Sid Presley Experience back in 1985. They’re one of those bands with a huge list of former members, and indeed new album ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’, the first Godfathers album in five years, sees main man Peter Coyne assemble a completely new line-up from the one that recorded 2017’s very well received ‘A Big Bad Beautiful Noise’.

Cécile Delpoïo – ‘Tuolla’ (Self-Released)

‘Tuolla’ represents a concept album by Cécile Delpoïo and has a full story to back it up. Tuolla is a magical land and home to the heroine of the story, Aodrëna, whom, although she lives in a beautiful place, believes the grass is greener on the other side.

Stratovarius – ‘Survive’ (earMUSIC)

Sometimes you come across bands who embody the Ship of Theseus paradox (perhaps more commonly known as Trigger’s Broom) where they have undergone so many lineup changes that not one original member remains. Sometimes this works and the force of the bands’ music and style develops its own entity that prevails despite changes in personnel, and other times its, frankly, a bit shit. Stratovarius can arguably be considered to fall into that former camp and despite a pretty chaotic history resulting in a number of lineup changes, and no longer having any original members, have still been dishing out well-received albums! It’s been seven seriously long years since we last had a new Stratovarius album, so I’d say it’s about time for a new one. Cue: ‘Survive’.

Oceans Ate Alaska/Invisions/Resolve – Manchester, Rebellion – 23 September 2022

Completing Jase W’s run of a slew of shows around Manchester last week was Birmingham metalcore outfit Oceans Ate Alaska. Bringing along with them for the ride are favourites of mine, InVisions, along with Resolve and Kubrick to shake Rebellion on a Friday night. Sadly it looked like Kubrick weren’t on the bill for tonight when our resident gigaholic checked the stage times upon arrival: that’s a shame in his eyes…
