This week’s hotly contested #VideoOfTheWeek title goes to a band who have been long-time favourites here at ÜRHQ, and that is LA mystic rockers Death Valley Girls, who once again have been exploring their inner existentialism – and their love of classic pop songs – with their latest single, on which they ask ‘What Are The Odds’ of them being mentioned in the same sentence as chart-topping goddess Madonna?
Well, very strong is the answer, as this lead single from their ‘Islands In The Sun’ album, which is due to be released in February, has a punked-up central riff which revolves around the one of the queen of pop’s biggest and most recognizable hits, as Bonnie Bloomgarden explained:
“When we wrote ‘I’m A Man Too’, we were trying to revisit No Doubt’s ‘I’m Just a Girl’, but through a new lens. ‘What Are The Odds’ is in the same way an investigation/revisitation of Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ but with a DVG spin.”
The accompanying video is suitably existential, alternately switching between the band lounging around in a city park, enjoying picnics and walking their dogs while covered up in black hoodies, while also being reincarnated in red beehive wigs at an epic pool party, with the clip quickly expanding into an exploration of existing in parallel universes and multidimensional space/time, as Bloomgarden explained:
“We love to think about consciousness, and existence, and we very much believe in some type of reincarnation, but also that this experience isn’t linear, there isn’t a past and future, there’s something else going on! What is it? Is it a simulation? Are we simulated girls??!”
