Having seen The Temperance Movement twice since their eight-year hiatus, in Bristol in 2025 and at Steelhouse Festival this year, where we were treated to previews of ‘Always Been Love’ and ‘Shadows’, it was obvious that they were ready to deliver some, riff ready music full of Phil Campbell’s vocally gritty performances.
This is 37 minutes eight seconds of a band who looked like they missed performing and recording together. Each track packs its own punches, some quickfire and over before you know you’ve been hit, , with ‘Shadows’, ‘Eat You Alive’ and ‘Love Kicks’ all coming in under three minutes.
Others take a meandering slower left-right combination that come from slower footwork (‘Scars’, ‘Mongrels’ and ‘Saving Grace’) and build up to the harder blows, either side.
This is typically Temperance Movement musically, a mix of clean and soaring blues guitar, solid rhythm section and that voice.
Without a doubt, my favourite track is ‘Hometown Kings and Queens’ a real heart on the sleeve moment.
Nonetheless, if you like your music bluesy, gritty and emotionally charged then this is an album for you – ten rounds with the Glasgow super featherweight that is Phil Campbell and his ring crew.
