There has been quite a buzz generating around The Plight in recent times, with many lofty comparisons being drawn, so when I was handed their much touted new opus, ‘Winds Of Osiris’, I was very interested to see if they lived up to the hype. Boy, do they deliver!
It’s easy to pull influences out of the mix here, with The Bronx and Thin Lizzy springing immediately to mind, but this isn’t plagiarism, this is wearing influences on your sleeve and melding them into something fresh and invigorating. Every single band member sounds like they’ve put everything they could into this album and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this band really explode on the back of this.
Opener ‘Spit On The Cross – Pt1’ gives notice of the album’s intentions with hardcore punk bluster mixed with twin lead guitars of the highest order. It’s a theme which rears its head throughout, and I can’t emphasise just how good this album is. The strange thing is, on the first few listens this album didn’t really grab me but, like many great albums, it grows on you, and having lived with it for a while I really think this could be marked down as a bit of a landmark album, and not just in British rock music if there’s any justice. In fac,t I can almost hear the wheels of The Plight bandwagon creaking in anticipation of the crowds that’ll be jumping on it once this album gets out into the wild.
They may have a hardcore punk pedigree and ethos but I would urge anyone who likes any kind of rock music to give this a spin. Songs like ‘Lovesick Maniac’, ‘Counting Teeth’ and ‘From Hell’ have all sorts to offer, from kick-in-the-balls aggression to twin guitar harmonies which would do Gorham and Robertson proud. Light, shade, heavy, mellow, fast, slow – it’s all here. And to top it all off, they also cut it live – big time – as anyone who has seen them on any of their umpteeen gigs in recent times will attest.
This will surely feature on plenty of ‘Best of 2009’ lists and rightly so. Don’t be surprised to see this hailed as a classic in years to come. Fucking choice!!!
