Artwork for Silicon Nitride by Sydney FateNow a six-piece band, Sydney Fate are an upcoming, alternative/metalcore band from Cardiff, South Wales. Consisting of both a clean and heavy vocalist, Bailey Edwards and Adam Rapado, guitarist Dominic Evans and Owen Whittaker, bassist Scott Butterworth and drummer Kristian ‘’Terry’ Collins. Debut full-length album, ‘Silicon Nitride’, packs a punch with eight melodic and emotionally charged tracks.

To date, the band has pre-released two tracks off the upcoming album, these being ‘Sound Alive’ and ‘Oceans’. From scanning social media comment sections, the reaction from fans have been positive, with praise for how far the lads have come from being a local band. Selecting to release these two particular songs will work in their favour, due to them giving a great insight into the rest of the feel and atmosphere of the remaining six tracks. If you dig either of these so far – make sure you check the album when released as it will not disappoint.

Each of the tracks has captured an individual, emotional struggle or journey. Opening song ‘TACENDA’ focuses on the inner conflicts of the mind for example. Although this provides an overall solid structure and flow to the album, it does run a risk of being too ‘depressing’ for a casual listen.

Most of the tracks are a length of between four to five minutes, with the majority injecting the most energy and grit in the last quarter. With the previous three quarters composing a slow pace and occasional repetitive lyrical verses – it is a worry that listeners may overlook the end of the tracks by skipping through.

Fifth track, ‘Chelsey Grin’ stands out from the others for me, being of a more eerie, calm atmosphere with the vocals being the forefront of attention. Producing a song of this kind, with timid background guitars, and all clean vocals that echo in the background can be risky. Praise has to be given to the band for how well they have executed this style, it not only demonstrates the talent of the vocalists; but diversity that doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb in the middle of the album.

Overall, it is noticeable that Sydney Fate are a start-up kind of band, but definitely one that are upcoming and has solid potential to grow. For fans of Our Hollow Our Home and Being As An Ocean.
