Artwork for The All Seeing Eye by Sound Of OriginSince first finding these guys at Stonebaked Promotions’ ‘Sniff The Riff’ almost three years ago, describing them as heavy fuzz with a singer reminding me of a hippy Ozzy Osbourne, I’ve kept an eye out for these guys. I actually almost lost track of this release as a myriad of other things kept cropping up, but I remembered in time to still catch this a little bit before release. The first dive into the music would show me where their latest sound has gone to…

I’m pretty happy to say it is more of the same. Opening track ‘Not Dead Yet’ is a perfect scene-setter, the soft, gloomy opening 50 seconds making you wonder if they have had a drastic switch in approach before smashing you in the face with a ten-ton hammer of a riff. It actually reminds me of first hearing the self-titled Black Sabbath track, with its combination of softer sounds into the heavier main section, or perhaps the modern affects of High on Fire, with the feel of ‘Bastard Samurai’, with either sound a real indication of the development of the Origin of Sound’s songwriting ability together.

‘Dim Carcosa’ has elements of space rock at times, certainly musically, reminding me of Sheffield bruisers Awooga and my coining space sludge in their direction, as it’s a moniker that may well also fit Sound of Origin just as well, judging by this latest monster. Their ability to blend quite seamlessly between the heavier and softer sides of their writing whilst neither missing a beat nor making it seem neither convoluted nor in any way off is further shown with mid-album track ‘Morning Bird’.

It’s a great release with plenty of depth and variety, taking the time to further step on from their earlier sound and transforming it into something a bit more varied and textured than before without losing their core ethos. There is still the fuzz you would expect, the shifting between the monotonous, glacial riffs and rhythm section and a softer, almost ethereal take to things without doing anything to alienate the fan base the lads have rightfully built up so far. Another strong album from an excellent label in APF and a band that seem to truly be taking a step to another level in Sound of Origin.
