Sabrina Sabrok – An Unexpected Low Point In Heavy Metal

It was with much excitement that I began the process of writing a profile of Argentine heavy metal sensation Sabrina Sabrok (real name Lorena Fabiana Colotta). Her bio claims that a band she fronted once opened for Marilyn Manson and alludes to an impressive discography. Critical reaction however was difficult to find.

What I’d heard in no way prepared me for what I saw and listened to online on her website and others. I knew I hadn’t seen it all but I had seen a lot (Rockbitch and L7 are prime exemplars of the more bizarre) and I did begin researching this article on Halloween. Yet my jaw dropped with every aspect of discovery tracing the evolution of this performer. I was fully that shocked…That insulted…That grossed out. WTF?!!!

There is not an ounce of talent, artistic experimentation or expression of sincere feeling evident in Sabrina Sabrok or her schlock garage band in any song or video they have created. Perhaps that sounds harsh. I feel contempt because it appears as though this ‘artist’ views me and any potential audience with contempt. The cynicism insults me that much particularly as Ms.Sabrok claims to have been a music teacher with seven years training.

At first I hesitated even to put fingers to keyboard after all the research I had done about this performer. But once I did the words came to me pretty quickly. I can think of few times when I have actually found myself so thoroughly repulsed by a musical act. But then it would be charitable to refer to Ms.Sabrok and her band as a ‘musical act’. What exists instead is a cheap wank fantasy for poorly sighted convicts and drunken sailors.

Sabrina Sabrok is a monstrous 125 pound mass of peroxide, cellulite and I’m estimating 18 kilograms of silicone. Add in cheap cosmetics, possible collagen lip injections and provocative leather outfits which flaunt boobies so massive they look like they could jump off her chest and attack a mailman or chase after a car at any moment and you have a performer nearly indistinguishable from a rubber stag party sex doll.

I would never fault anyone for being open with their sexuality (and my other articles on Uber Rock are proof) or surgically enhance what they have for self-esteem. That is not what Sabrina Sabrok has done. She has let plastic surgeons have a field day in a desperate attempt to pander to libido to steal audience attention away from real musicians and emerged with little appeal that I can see.

I wouldn’t care about that if the music were even passable but it isn’t. Not by a long-shot. When it comes to her singing I can’t tell if her recordings illustrate overuse of pitch corrector or complete lack of one in dire need of it. I am at a total loss in trying to figure out if any of what I heard was deliberate or all part of some elaborate joke.

As for English pronunciation of lyrics I’ve never thought it was THAT important when it comes to metal singing or vocals in popular music in general and my guess would be that few vocalists do either.

But that was only until I started seeking out foreign bands to write about. I gave a difficult time to Czech band the Agony (they turned out to be some of the coolest and nicest musicians I’ve dealt with) in an article over their English pronunciation. But Ms.Sabrok is the poster-girl for ‘No speaka da Ingleesh’ which of course begs the question ‘Why doesn’t just sing in her own language’?
