The ground-breaking, mould-shattering veteran broadcaster Annie Nightingale has died at the age of 83.

She was the first female DJ  to join Radio One, in 1970. Her last show was broadcast on Tuesday (9 January), just two days before her death, making her the longest serving DJ not just on Radio One and the BBC but also anywhere in the world.

Over her broadcasting career Nightingale championed all forms of innovative music, from King Crimson to The Buzzcocks to Primal Scream, believing that new artists deserved to be heard no matter what the establishment, for which she worked, believed.
