Vancouver-based power/thrash metal outfit Omega Crom currently celebrate almost eight years on the underground scene having been founded by melodic lead vocalist/guitarist Johnny K.
Joined by Albertan Wayne Holden on guitar, fingers-only bassist Ian “Rapid Mutilation” Wilcke and east coast drummer Dan La Pierre this all-Canadian ensemble currently highlights an eclectic west coast metal scene.
On stage with other metal bands as either support or the headliners they both fit in, and stand out at the same time carving an unmistakable niche firmly within their milieu.
Stylistically a mixture of elements like aggressive death metal, shred and thrash forging and mixing new riffs with the influence of their past work unforgotten, their sound will immediately strike some as being deceptively natural and unforced.
They clearly have put enormous time and energy into containing the sounds in their heads and translating them into recordings the rest of us can hear should we choose to.
Like their sound their following has kind of a life of its own. Fans gravitate towards the music Omega Crom makes the way the guys in the band have – instinctually but with a recognition that it is very different.
Omega Crom’s eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Blood, Steel & Fire’ was launched on April 5th, 2010 through Reversed Records. I highly recommend it to seasoned metal fans because this is an interesting take on what you already like.
But for those just beginning to enjoy the genre, Omega Crom is not one of the acts they will likely want to start with. In my opinion the style and sound of Omega Crom blends far too many metal subgenres to make them accessible to music lovers that are not already attuned to heavy metal in its most popular forms.
All I can add is that it is not an unfamiliar experience to hear other bands within a groups sound. But it is rather an unfamiliar experience to hear several very different bands playing at the same time within a group’s sound.
