No Sugarcoating & No Bullshit: December

Well, we made it, it’s nearly the end of the year, so it’s my last rambling, nonsense-filled blog, of 2013.

Keeping in the festive spirit, and of course as always, keeping this music related (in some strange way), I got thinking about Christmas songs and then the Christmas number one in the UK. This will of course be a rant of sorts, but why change my ways now?

I’ve been trying to get a decent, rock music Christmas song playlist together, but aside from The Dwarves ‘Drinking up Christmas’ and Ramones ‘Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)’, I couldn’t think of much else I like in the way of festive songs. I figured, to hell with it, I’ll just add those two songs to a playlist of normal music I like, how about some Motorhead while we’re having our Christmas lunch? Why not.

Now, I imagine this argument has been covered by a few people on the internet, but it makes me laugh at the irony.

Back in 2009 someone decided to get a petition together to try and get an alternative band to rival the shit which comes off a certain TV “talent show” in the chase for the Christmas number one spot; when I heard the idea I thought it was a fun and novel way to try and get something decent in the charts. When I found it was in fact Rage Against The Machine who they were trying to get to the top, I immediately went off the idea as I hate R.A.T.M’s music and what they stand for – maybe I’ll get many people disagreeing with me here, but I stand by this.

Their video in Wall Street, staged? I reckon so, I may be talking bollocks, but I find it hard to believe it wasn’t staged. Plus their views seem like good marketing to me.

If R.A.T.M were a fake rebellious band with good music, I’d maybe like them, but wouldn’t be able to completely respect them, but as I detest their music, I simply can’t make a connection with them. You could argue, although if they are fake, maybe they get people to think about the world around them, and the corruption with the leaders of the world, however many people I’ve met who have been brainwashed by R.A.T.M, went to a certain pompous Rock School motorheadxmaswhich I mentioned in an earlier blog. Generally can spout out fashionable opinions without backing them up, usually everything has to be “against the man”, despite the fact they’re privileged, middle-class white kids. This could probably be put down to ignorance on these people, and I do know people who like R.A.T.M who don’t meet this opinion.

Anyway, my bases covered, the parent record label of Epic Records is Sony, and the parent label of Syco is…Sony. I imagine Simon Cowell was rubbing his hands in glee at this prospect, if his act loses to R.A.T.M, he must still get some of the profits, I may be wrong, and if not then the whole act of rebellion is lost in some respects, as either way, Sony will make a huge profit – it’s all gone to the man…man.

I guess it’s a huge achievement to overthrow Satan and one of his shit demon acts, and a great idea to get something potentially decent on the radio, but personally for me if it’s to go against an evil corporate record company, maybe choose a band who isn’t on the same label as the band you’re trying to beat. Simple.

Really though, I can’t be bothered with the radio (unless anything good and glunky is on the airwaves), so sod Christmas music, turn up the Glunk, get drunk and eat yourself into a food coma.

Merry bloody Christmas, see you on the other side…
