Artwork for Polarity by Night ThievesWe first came across London alt-rock quartet Night Thieves when they stole our hearts (sic) with their second EP ‘Spiral’ back in October 2021, We described said release as ploughing “a somewhat unusual musical furrow between the commercially sensitive power pop of the likes of Paramore, the alt-rock innovation of Garbage and darker prog-rock sensibilities of Incubus and Muse”. Now, a little more than two years later, the foursome are back, and following a heavier and more gothic noir with this introspective yet explorative new offering.

Yes, some of those previous comparators are still omnipresent, and worthily so, especially in Jess Moyle’s breathless Williams-esque delivery on the catchy as fuck opener ‘Collide’, which hits with the force of the concrete truck while retain a beautiful pop sensibility, and the massive ‘Through The Looking Glass’, as well as the thumping anthemic of closer ‘Walkaway’, with its Lzzy Hale style whispered interludes and integration of power pop dynamics and massive, crunching riffs, the latter a combination which characterizes this cohesive and impactful collection.

Night Thieves have moved in a heavier direction with this release, combining the stripped-back grit and anger of the likes of Spiritbox and Royal Blood into their previously more polished approach, yet retaining the latter in terms of the accuracy and veracity of their delivery, and the result is a perfect progression in their sound.

  • ‘Polarity’ is released on Friday 19 January.
