Galway hefters Ten Ton Slug are to make history next month, when they become not only the first Irish metal band to play in the Kalahari Desert but also the first to do so in their native tongue.

The sludge monsters will be heading south of the equator to become the only non-African band appearing at this year’s Vulture Thrust: Anger Management Fest in Botswana on 1 November. They also will be playing a warm-up show the previous night. Due to the sub-tropical daytime heat, both events will take place overnight.
Speaking about the epic trip – which will see TSS playing the entirely Irish language track ‘Mallacht an tSloda‘, from 2024’s ‘Colossal Oppressor’ album – the band told me:
We are extremely grateful to Culture Ireland for funding this Botswana adventure, and to Tshomarelo Mosake of Overthrust for inviting us over and organising the events.
These opportunities are made possible by a love and passion for metal that transcends language, location and culture. Underground metal truly knows no borders. We look forward to sliming the Kalahari Desert.
Prior to their historic journey, they will play shows at Dali in Cork on 20 September and the Roisin Dubh in Galway on 11 October.
