Highway: Bandidas Colombiana

A legendary all-female metal band called Highway remain based in their native Bogota, Colombia having formed in 2003. The sound these sensual senoritas have crafted have earned them a well-deserved reputation in the world of metal.
They kick it on stage in delicious emulation of their classic medal heroes like Judas Priest, Warlock, Joan Jett amongst many others. The influence of their idols comes through in their sound but their reach extends well beyond it. The collective life experience of the members of this band is different and they carry with them their local culture in expressing themselves musically.
There is something so beguiling about a metal band’s sound when it is augmented by a female vocalist. When that vocalist happens to be snarling lyrics in Colombian Spanish as Highway singer Nataly Ossman does the sublime variation can enhance one’s enjoyment of the music. No proper comparison can be drawn because no band will ever sound quite like this one.
Heavy Metal is truly a world tour of its own carving niches across the globe. I got to chatting with bassist and founder Lina de la Parra – a lovely, talented and very erudite young woman. “The current line-up features me on bass guitar, Tatiana Rico on drums, Mayerly Mesa on guitar and Nataly Ossman on vocals. I am the only founding member of the band remaining,” she said as Highway gears up for a fifteen-gig tour.
“Currently we’re getting ready to set off on a 3 week South American tour that starts on November 22nd. The dates include shows in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. We’re also working on our next album, three of the songs we have ready. They will be played during the tour as a teaser for what it is to come.”
Having heard the new material I can tell you they are making their best music and giving what they have already done that is really saying something.
